The first race of World Marathon Majors series XII finished with some unforgettable experience. Eliud Kipchoge sets a new marathon world record with the time of 02:01:39. He beats the record of Dennis Kimetto of Kenya, this record was also created in Berlin Marathon 2014.
The 2nd & 3rd place was achieved by Amos Kipruto & Wilson Kipsang resp. and they both were far behind Eliud Kipchoge.
In Women’s category, Gladys Cherono from Kenya made a hat-trick of Berlin Marathon victories and also sets a new course record of 02:18:11 after beating the course record set 13 years ago by Mizuki Noguchi (Japan).
The race was very close – Gladys Cherono, Ruti Aga & Tirunesh Dibaba have completed at the same time, the only differentiator was the second’s dial. It was the first marathon in history in which three women finished inside 2:19 hr.
World champion and Olympic champion, Tirunesh Dibaba was leading since starting but lost some control after halftime resulting in 3rd place. But she fought well.
